Chronic use of proton pump inhibitors, such as omeprazole, in humans has damaging side effects including kidney disease, anemia, and suppressed digestion of essential nutrients, especially calcium.

Kentucky Equine Research (KER) president Dr. Joe Pagan was featured in a recent article in the Paulick Report that investigates the effects of omeprazole use in horses, highlighting a related study conducted at KER. The study examined the effects of omeprazole on calcium digestibility in horses.
