Vitamin E is first and foremost an antioxidant, an agent that keeps free radicals from forming and potentially weakening cells and tissues. Many horse owners utilize it for the cellular-level repair of muscle following exercise. It’s also vital to immune and circulatory functions—all integral to healing.
Kat Rohl of EZ 2 Spot Appaloosas in Cannon Falls, Minn., saw the healing power of vitamin E firsthand when her gelding, Walter, sustained a major laceration to his neck.
Kat explains, “I found him on April 29, at about 7 p.m., with a huge gash in his neck—no idea how he did it. We called the vet to come right away.”
Kat’s vet stitched the wound and inserted drains. Three days later, it was clear that healing was not progressing smoothly. Kat says, “I could see signs of the stitches not holding, and after that everything went downhill, and fast.” She took Walter to Anoka Equine Veterinary Services, where vets removed the tube and stitches and cut the edges of the wound back. Kat knew extra nutritional support was also needed to encourage healing.
She contacted Kentucky Equine Research (KER) feed manufacturing partner Farmers Mill & Elevator, Inc., of Castle Rock, Minn., for a recommendation. Sales and marketing manager Ron Genrick recommended Nano•E®, a rapidly bioavailable vitamin E supplement developed and produced by KER.
Kat started Walter on Nano•E three days later. After a couple weeks, he’s well on his way to a full recovery. “I am so thoroughly impressed with this product and how it has helped Walter’s body regenerate and heal,” she said. “These pictures speak a thousand words.” Healthy new tissue has developed and the wound is almost entirely healed.
Fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin E must be offered to horses in a way that maximizes absorption. Each vitamin E nanoparticle in Nano•E is encapsulated or surrounded by liposomes, which allows the nanoparticle to mix evenly throughout a water-based environment, such as the gastrointestinal tract. Controlled studies at KER indicate that Nano•E is superior to synthetic and other natural vitamin E sources.
“I had used another vitamin E source in the past. The other product has such a strong chemical smell and with the consistency of honey, the horses would not eat it on their grain. I had to syringe it into their mouths, which is much harder than just putting it on their feed,” Kat said. “Nano•E is so much easier to use because you can put it directly on the horse’s feed and they will still eat it.”
