Manure Management: Helpful Hints for Horse Owners

On average, a medium-sized horse can produce about 30 pounds of manure and 2.5 gallons of urine every day. Multiply this by several horses, add soiled bedding, and horse owners suddenly have a lot of material to deal with.

Horse experts at the Equine Science Center at Rutgers University have written three new fact sheets on manure management to help farm owners and managers decide on the best way to handle barn waste.

The fact sheets cover options like storing manure on the farm, spreading waste material on fields, and having manure hauled away for disposal. Guidelines are also offered for avoiding contamination of ground water if manure is stored or spread near streams.
