Horses recovering from an acute case of laminitis must have a carefully designed feed management plan in order to avoid a recurrence of the problem. For those horses that developed laminitis because of sensitivity to carbohydrates, the diet must be built almost entirely around fiber rather than grain products.

To help an obese laminitic horse lose weight, provide limited grass or low-calorie hay. A supplement containing protein, vitamins, and minerals will help the horse heal damaged tissues. For thin laminitic horses, consider providing calories from beet pulp (without molasses), alfalfa hay or cubes, soy hulls, or vegetable oil. Owners are advised to consult a veterinarian or equine nutritionist to evaluate diets for laminitic horses.
